Here are examples of Top of the Pops and Smash Hits covers. I would be competing with such magazines for the 'tween' niche market. I have noted the use of bright colours, cartoon styled fonts, and striking images of the featured artist.

Below are examples of more mature magazines MOJO and Q, i have noted they use dark colours such a black and red for a more sophisticated publication. Though their content is extremeley different from the 'pop' genre mags, they too employ strong images, i will consider this when taking my own images.

NME is arguably the most popular music magazine at present. It features a mixture of indie, rock and mainstream artists and is a firm favourite amongst students and teenagers in general. It is a opinionated magazine and also boasts a recognisable layout, the research into this publication has been very succesful in inspiring my own ideas for my own magazine.

Continuing my research, below is an example of another magazine i researched, this publication, NYLON, is not of specifically music content, however it is renowned for it's striking covers and potentially shares my target audience. Typically this would be bought by 16-25 year olds, and so if i was to produce an 'indie' themed magazine it would be a competitor.

This last image is an example of a double page spread, though i am tackling the cover first this is a good example of how to layout a double page spread, using a variety of images and an article.

I have concluded i am to create a typical pop music magazine, i feel their is a defined target audience for me to aim at, and many example of conventions i can employ. I am sure the secure layout of these magazines will be beneficial to my coursework, essentially acting as a framework for my own creativity. I am confident that my research has allowed me to consider many genres of magazine. Now i know my direction i must begin to develop my own ideas.
