Finished Front Cover

I am very pleased with the new result of my front cover. I think it looks more neatly set out and the bright red fonts for the different stories are definately very striking. I like how I added a black box behind the smaller image as it makes it stand out a little bit more. I like the color scheme as I think they go very well together. Also, I really like the way my title has a gradient overlay because it looks more unique and eye catching.

Front cover- Working progress!

This was my initial front cover which I was quite impressed with. However, I came across a few issues which forced me to change it. The story at the bottom of the page is more striking than the 'Natasha Calder' part which is an issue because it is not the main story. Also, the star covering the model's body looks slightly out of place so I decided to remove this completely so the focus was more on the image. The different coloured fonts for the different stories doesn't really match so I changed all of these to bright red to make it more striking.

Inspiration

Here are some photographs I used as inspiration for my photoshoot. I chose these because I liked the poses and thought they would suit my model. Also I thought they would make a striking photo for my magazine front cover. Some of the poses are very strong and show attitude like the ones standing up whereas the other ones are quite girly so could preferably be used on the inside. I also liked the way they are dressed so I decided to copy some of their style so my model looked more fashionable and appealing to a young audience.

Photoshoot

Firstly, my photoshoot was completed successfully with many photographs of my model to choose from. My photoshoot was located in my college's media studio which is set up well with equipment for students to use. The set was very basic with a plain, white background and white floor. I think this was a good idea because then the reader's attention is on the image instead of the background. At one point, I asked my model to sit on a black chair which I think worked well because the black contrasted with the white background so stood out on the photo.
My model was Natasha Calder who is another student in my media class. She wore silver sequined shorts, a black vest top finished with a black blazer and heels. I chose for my model to wear these clothes because they showed a glamorous element within the photograph.

My Magazine

Before I start creating my magazine, I need to consider different possible titles and and their connotations in order for my magazine to be appropriate for it's target audience. To help me with finding a relevent title and its connotation, I used a thesaurus website to help me get some ideas.

• Melody
• Vibe
• Volume
• Boom Box
• Mixer

All of these potential titles connotate different feelings of sound and enthusiasm which makes the potential audience very clear. These potential names have a youthful sound to them so therefore the target audience is more likely to be young adults and teenagers. 'Melody' is quite a suitable title for people who are interested in ballads and soft music whereas 'Vibe' and 'Boom Box' are more up-beat names for r & b and chart music etc.

Existing magazine double page spread

This is a double page spread I chose because it has a big, unique title which stands out clearly. The black background of the letters suggests there is a slight 'rebellious' feeling. The mid-shot of singer, Lily Allen shows off the magazine's 'rock and roll' genre. Therefore I think this would be appropriate for a teenage/young adult audience who take an interest into rock and roll type of music. The page is set out neatly with a striking picture, big title and minimal writing which is eye-catching for the reader. Also, the page uses bright colours which mix well together (black, white and red).

Existing magazine contents page

This is a contents page I found of NME magazine. As you can see, the design is clearly set out and there is lots going on. The big pictures are very appealing to the eye and the bold white fonts in the black backgrounds stand out well for the titles. The page numbers are neatly listed in a bright colour so therefore they are clear for the reader to see. I think this magazine has a rock genre which is evident by the pictures of rock band 'oasis.' This magazine would appeal for a wide audience as oasis have a large variety of fans. I think this is a good contents page as there isn't lots of text which is more appealing to the reader.

Existing magazine covers

I chose this front cover because I think the image is very striking and the strong, bold colours are very eye-catching. It is very youthful and creates a lively mood for the reader. This magazine shows a striking picture of R&B sensation Mary J. Blige and mentions name such as Flo Rida and The Dream so therefore it is aimed at an audience mainly interested in R&B music. It is also aimed at an audience of teens and young adults. This is evident with the close-up shot of Mary J Blige on the cover.

This magazine contrasts to the one above in many ways. Firstly, it has a rock genre as it has a picture of a young rock group on the cover. The band 'The Jonas Brothers' are followed by a young and teenage audience so therefore this magazine appeals to a younger audience. It is also evident from title that this magazine supports a more 'alternative' genre of music for example, indie and rock. In addition to this, the variety of colour and text styles on the cover also suggests that this magazine is aimed at those with a more 'individual' and 'unique' taste in music.


The magazine 'Blender' is an American magazine which bills itself as 'the ultimate guide to music and more.' This magazine appears to be aimed at a more feminine audience which is evident from the picture on the cover. Also, people who are interested in pop music and ballads may be interested in reading this magazine because this is the type of music the cover artist sings. I like the design of this magazine. It is set out very neatly and uses strong, bold colours. The big orange title is very eye-catching and the contrasting colours black and orange make the fonts very striking.

Print prelim

As you can see, our task was to create a front cover and contents page for a college magazine. I was told to use images, fonts and colour appropriate for 'college students.' I enjoyed doing the task and I picked up skills which I can now use in my main project.

I think I was successful at doing this task and used a good picture for my front cover. However, when I do it properly I will make sure my font isn't slightly overlapping the picture.

I worked with 3 other people to take photo's but also had the chance to work individually when editing it in photoshop.

In conclusion, I think my prelim went well and looks good. However, this is just a starting point and improvements will be made for my main project.
