I believe my front cover is typical of a real media product in this genre and with such target audience. I learned through my research and planning the effectiveness of 'cute' images as well as using more than one image. With this in mind i think i have selected suitable images and a strong variation. A typical convention of pop music magazines is bright colours, again i have conformed to this proven convention and used a variety of bold colours. My target audience would appreciate a variety of font also i noted this when researching other existing examples. I believe my product uses the conventions of real media texts, but remains original with my layout.
Comparing my magazine cover you can see the general comparisons...
The model on my front cover's main image does a great job of creating a self-assured yet approachable image. I believe this kind of striking image would improve magazine sales. I was careful to select outfits that were casual and represent 'daisy' as a 'down to earth' pop star y audience would appreciate. Fortunately, the clothing chose also never clashed with the colours of the other aspects of the magazine. Ifact i think it works well with the shades of pink. The general colour scheme of pink i continued throughout my pieces to creat an identitiy and a look for my whole magazine, this is another technique i discovered successful magazines employ through my own research. Below is examples of how Q magazine and my own continue a colour scheme to great effect;
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Im pleased that my product is an accurate representation of female teenagers and 'pop' music fans. The images i have taken are of young artists, which is inspiring to my audience. I am pleased with my images of main feature Jayne because she has an appeal that is appropriate for this publication. She isn't posing provocatively rather she is relaxed and youthful. I think this is an ideal representation of this particular social group, of female 'tweens' ( aged 11-16). The content of my magazine also represents my audience. The interview with 'daisy love' is fictional but i created a voice for pop sugar that was fun and not too sophisticated, i had feared this would intimidate my audience and not be a appropriate representation. Below is an extract from the interview.
In this image below, an outake from my cover shoot, you can see jayne's casual attire and friendly attitude through the image. She is young attractive and successful yet a typical teen.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I researched one of the most successful pop music magazines 'smash hits'. Though now ended, it was distirbuted by EMAP, and so i would suggest they would carry a magazine such as my own. I also found a distributor in PANINI that would perhaps distribute 'pop sugar' as it already has a fahsion and lifestyle magazine for our audience of (11-16)
Who would be the audience for your media product?
I believe my audience would be female teenagers in secondary school, and perhaps pre-teen. I think the age range is 11 years to 16 years, I think it is able to speak to such a broad audience because the content is strictly music. if there were articles informing or opinionated perhaps it would be too mature for the younger spectrum or uninteresting to the older ones. However, featuring solely music it is able to speak to almost all female teens.
How did you attract/address your audience?
I think my title POPSUGAR is attractive to the audience. It gives a clear indication of the content and genre of the text and also promotes a fun and youthful magazines. It's typically girly and the colour and font combined would speak to the majority of teenage girls.
The cover is also successful at attracting an audience, it promises quizzes, competitions etc.
It also promotes three featured artists. The image and fonts are bold and striking. The cover is the first thing my auience will see so i made extra effort to make it eye-catching an appealing. The fact my model is looking directly at the camera also aids the appeal of my magazine as it is enticing to an audience.
My layout is simplistic and does not confuse my audience, it is easy to follow and im sure they would appreciate that. The content to is effective but simple, this way my magazine is accessible for all.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
The compute proved essential to complete a successful coursework. Fortunately due to the preliminary task I was able to familiarise myself with vital Photoshop and I could put my new skill and knowledge into the creation of my final magazine. I found the software was able to assist my creative visions.
Below is a list of the different technologies I used throughout the process of creating my magazine.
Photoshop (and photoshop elements at home) - this software proved vital in editing images, creating a layout for my text and ultimately constructing the whole thing
Digital SLR Camera – this was used to take the high quality images for my print. I noted how much finer these images were than an average digital camera.
Lighting - I took my images at home in 'studio' i created in a space. It was successful in creating a clear backdrop, it also allowed me to see the affect of lighting. After a while i was able to manipulate the lighting to my own effect and to benefit my images
Google – i used this search engine to find images for research of existing media products. I also researched distributor using google.
DaFont - this font website presented me with copious amounts of fonts that were not provided by photoshop, on DaFont i found three of my most significant fonts and so it played a vital role in the construction of my magazine.
Blogger- Keeping a detailed blog as allowed me to track progress and note and successes or failing i have had.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
I found the preliminary task gave me an interest in the print aspect of media, as well as an insight to the difficulty of the task. Reviewing my preliminary piece; the image was weak, the fonts were mundane, i felt the colours clashed and overall the magazine had a clumsy and messy look to it. Fortunately through my coursework i have developed my skills using software such as photoshop and have become more confident in my creative ideas and success at producing print pieces. Now i feel my final print work has a professional look and i am proud of my production.
