Here are some current magazine contents pages for me to get an idea of how they are and should be presented. By doing my research, I can identify trends in how they are presented and when I come to make my designs, I can make as pleasing to the eye as possible.
I've decided to feature contents pages from Kerrang and NME but also Q magazine to add a contrast.

NME and Kerrang uses Sans Serif fonts which give it a more youthful and modern look whilst in contrast to this, Q magazine uses a Serif font and because of this, it adds a more classy look and orderly feel to the contents pages.
Even though I will not be using the 'Serif' style, its good to compare it.

Here is an NME contents page, It features text surrounding an image which is obviously the cover storey and it immediately brings your attention to it which i think is its purpose to it. However, the text at either side of the images is the contents however the text on the right of the page is larger and more profound than the contents on the left side. This technique is used as a 'highlights' part and picks out the more interesting part of the magazine, the storeys the company think that will be the most popular.
The contents on the right is useful to the reader and contains the full magazine breakdown but this does not necessarily highlight the most interesting parts.

Kerrang's approach to the contents page is similar in a way to NME except instead of a double contents sections with one which shows highlights and full, except instead if this, it shows thumbnail images of interesting storeys with their adjacent page numbers underneath them. Also, a larger image of the cover storey is in the same format as the thumbnail images except it stands out more. This is what Kerrang wanted to do as is the storey people want to read and the one which Kerrang probably spent the most money on.
Here is an example of Q's Contents pages.
As you can see, the Serif style fonts give a clean and ordered smart finish to the design.
I like how it looks but I do not want to use in my magazine as i don't think it would match the style of photography and photo shoot i want to do.
