Magazine Research

NME Magazine

NME stands for New Musical Express. The magazine features indie/rock music, selecting bands/artists that fit into this genre. It generally targets 16-19 year olds.

I like this front cover and aim to recreate a similar style magazine. The featured artist is Lily Allen, who fits into the category of indie/rock. You can tell this from the grungey feel the magazine has. The chosen font helps create this feel due to the 'rebel' look it gives. The way the artist is dressed fits in with this. The cover shot is striking, which is needed for a successful front cover. It is a portrait shot and relatively close up so she is prominent and stands out. There is a general colour scheme of red and black which runs throughout the cover and double page spread. This is something I will need to produce in my own magazine.

As you can see the double page spread imitates the style of the front cover. The text again creates a 'rebel' look which is the impression that this particular artist gives through her appearance and music. The accompanying picture takes up almost a full page of the magazine and although it is a fairly simple shot, against a plain white background, it is again striking due to the colours of the clothing and her dark hair, making the image stand out.

Kerang!

Kerang Magazine is mainly a grunge/heavy metal based mag and targets teenagers approximately 13-18 years of age.

You can see by the font used for the title of the magazine that it is clearly a grunge/metal genre as the font is quite rough and edgey. The band 'Bring me the Horizon' have been featured on this particular cover and they fit the genre of music well, as they are a heavy metal band. Particular focus is made on one member of the band, showing him as the lead singer. Oddly, the band are dressed in suits, this is unusual as it is not the typical attire of such a band. This goes against the normal codes and conventions of a 'goth' magazine. The stereotypical view of heavy metal bands is usually long dark overcoats and make-up. We see the band still has there long shaggy hair and tattoo's. I believe this has been done as to not alienate the current audience of kerrang.
